Overview:
An average of 34 people died on South African roads each day during the 2007 Easter weekend...
We want to prevent such statistics. So with all of this in mind, RegAlert started out by developing a driver identification system with the assistance, advice and cooperation of emergency medical services from various South African organisations. Our technology partnership with BPO Med (a division of the IQ Business Group) ensures a technology solution of the highest standard.
Since then, RegAlert has expanded to include solutions for passengers and cyclists, as well as others. New services are constantly being considered and developed and we welcome any suggestions from both paramedics and everyone else we wish to protect through our emergency services, because we feel it is extremely important not to lose touch with all those concerned.
The need for an emergency services system like RegAlert's became apparent after an increasing number of incidents occurred where motor vehicle accident patients, who had been rendered unconscious or unable to communicate, were being taken to inappropriate medical facilities despite having the benefit of medical aid or any other medical insurance, simply because paramedics had no way of knowing this crucially important information.
These occurrences are unavoidable if there is insufficient identification to confirm a person's medical aid status and very few private hospitals will accept such a patient unless payment is absolutely guaranteed.
The alternative is to take unidentified patients to the nearest government hospital which may not have the resources and/or facilities to treat these patients efficiently. Knowing nothing about their patient's medical history or possible conditions or allergies can also make paramedics' lives extremely difficult.
There exists an unfortunate public perception that paramedics can be uncaring or lack a sense of medical ethics. But the harsh reality is that paramedics are doing stressful work under intense strain. That is why RegAlert has made it our mission to try our utmost best to alleviate this, and in doing so, help paramedics and their patients alike, in order to help save lives.
Our varied partnerships help us not only to achieve our life-saving mission to protect your life and the lives of those closest to you. They also help us to protect the vulnerable ones in our community as a whole -- from community upliftment and social responsibility partnerships to strategic alliances with technology partners.
The Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children -- Community Upliftment:
"The Teddy Bear Clinic has entered into an initial partnership with RegAlert. We are very impressed with and excited about the potential of the two organisations. The primary aim would be to expand the RegAlert concept to children who may find themselves in situations which may compromise their safety. The most significant of these are lost children and those involved in accidental injury and abuse. This has certain implications as the most vulnerable children are often not in a position to afford the protection they need.
The Clinic is very excited about the potential of the RegAlert system to meet the needs of the vulnerable groups with whom we work. An agreement has been reached with RegAlert that a portion of the proceeds from their bracelets will come to the Clinic for their Corporate Social Investment portfolio ...
The monthly injection into the clinic will be invaluable as we need ongoing sustainable business partners who will both assist us financially, with marketing in synergy with the mutual aspirations of the two organizations, i.e. the well-being of children and communities.
While protecting children, we will also be promoting the fact that “Child Protection Is Everyone’s Business” and collaboration between government, civil society and business is essential in achieving this aim.
We wish the project well and your support of them will build us."

In January 2004, RegAlert was registered and development began for a good solution that would assist emergency medical services (EMS / paramedics) personnel in identifying the driver involved in a motor vehicle accident.
The need for such an identification system became apparent after increasing incidents where motor vehicle accident patients, who were rendered unconscious or unable to communicate, were being taken to inappropriate medical facilities despite having the benefit of a private medical aid or other medical insurance because paramedics had no way of knowing this important information.
These occurrences are unavoidable if there is insufficient identification to confirm a person's medical aid status and very few private hospitals will accept unidentified patients unless payment is guaranteed. The alternative is to take these patients to the nearest government hospital which may not have the resources or facilities to correctly treat such patients immediately.
Even though medical identification is not a brand new concept, it was apparent that not all the identification products available on the market were being used by paramedics.
The first step was to find out why the existing identification systems were not being used. With the aid of paramedics from across South Africa, it was discovered that paramedics were not always aware that these systems existed, or chose to ignore them as they did not affect their patients' treatment. Further investigations revealed that members often failed to use these identification systems, usually either as a result of ignorance or loss.
With this knowledge, RegAlert again consulted paramedics nationally for their opinions and suggestions regarding an effective emergency identification system.
It was determined that approximately 95% of paramedics already had their own cell phones, and the vehicle registration number was chosen as a reference number as it is clearly presented, reflective and can in most cases withstand damage sustained during a car accident.
Based on these facts, we developed a driver identification system using a standard cell phone to assist EMS in identifying their patients. The system also allows the patient's next of kin to be notified immediately. [ more benefits ]
With all of the above factors taken into account, the RegAlert system was created and it essentially became a system developed by paramedics for paramedics with the help and experience of our technology partner, BPO Med.
As mentioned, since then, RegAlert has expanded to include solutions for passengers and cyclists, as well as others. [ more about our emergency identification services ]
